网上流传一则笑话，秘书在上厕所时，美国老板打电话来：“Where are you？”秘书慌忙之中回答：“I'm in the toilet！”老板惊呼：“What are you doing in the toilet?！”（你在马桶里干什么？！ ）「上厕所」有好几种说法虽然都是英文，但是不同的文化对「厕所」有不同的说法。
英国人叫厕所“toilet”或“loo”，其中后者又更口语：I'll just go to the loo. （我正要上厕所。
）菲律宾厕所的说法是“comfort room”（舒适的房间），简称 CR。
美国最常见的厕所叫法是 “restroom”，或直接说“men’s room”、“ladies' room”，就像我们中文会用「洗手间」代替厕所一样。
而toilet在美式英文里是指「马桶」，抽水马桶的全名是flush toilet。
所以“I'm in the toilet”，听起来就好像是「我在马桶里」。
“In the toilet”字面意思是掉到马桶，进而可以引申为「处在很糟糕、窘迫的局面」（In a miserable, pitiful, or very unfortunate condition）。
